Marks/Inscriptions: PUTTER by HUGH PHILP St. Andrews, Scotland, PERIOD 1820—30, 5A (on card tied to shaft). RT (initials on shaft right underneath bottom of grip. 3 (stamped horizontally and vertically right underneath bottom of grip). H. PHILP (maker’s mark)
Additional Notes: Putter may have been made/finished by an apprentice. Horn insert is cut more narrowly than other Philp clubs in collection. First two pins are too close to the face edge, not located in center of insert like they were usually placed. Horn does not appear to be a replacement. Circular area on face does not have corresponding damage or mark on horn. Clubmaker’s usually wouldn’t use wood with knothole for clubhead.
