About The Golf Museum

The Golf Museum at James River Country Club is a must see attraction. The museum is the oldest chartered golf museum in the world; home to some of the oldest artifacts that date back to the pre-1930s.  The mission of the Golf Museum is to display artifacts depicting the ancient and honorable history of the game, and to assist researchers and enthusiasts in their quest for further knowledge of its origins.   As you enter the 1,800 square foot, newly renovated Golf Museum, the room radiates by history and heritage, creating speechless reactions.  A large, eight- by twelve-foot, high-definition projection screen drops down from the ceiling, making it accessible to any event.  Some of the artifacts displayed include legends of the game such as Old Tom Morris, Bobby Jones, Harry Vardon, and many more.  The perimeter of the museum space boasts an extensive library featuring rare first pressings, educational and instructional journals and texts, fictional musings, and other references chronicling the antiquity and popularity of the game.  With such an impressive backdrop, it’s no wonder that the Golf Museum is such a popular room to host a special event.

Our Mission: Curating, Collecting and Exhibiting

The mission of the Golf Museum at James River Country Club is to display artifacts depicting the ancient and honorable history of the game. Most items date back pre 1930. Prior to 1920 clubs and balls were constructed by hand, one club or ball at a time. Some of the greatest golfers of the time, Scotland’s Old Tom Morris for example, made their own clubs and balls and used them in competition.
